Attack on NDC Candidate Convoy in Amaezekwe
Tension has escalated in the Ezza South and Ezza North Local Government areas of Ebonyi State following fresh violence that resulted in fatalities and significant property destruction. The incidents, attributed to suspected political thugs, have led to the burning of vehicles, canopies, chairs, and other valuables across the region.
The primary incident occurred on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Amaezekwe. Attackers allegedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pump-action guns opened fire on the convoy of Rollins Offia Nwali, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Ezza South State Constituency. Nwali was returning from a consultation in the Amazekewe community at the time of the attack.
Security operatives attached to Nwali engaged the assailants in a gun battle after ensuring the safety of the candidate and his team. The confrontation resulted in the burning of Nwali’s Toyota Hilux van.
Deaths and Injuries Among Attackers
Two suspected political thugs were killed during the incident. One attacker died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries in a hospital one day after the shooting. Five other attackers are reportedly receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital with critical conditions. Reports indicate that one of the injured individuals underwent an amputation.
The violence has contributed to broader bickering between the state Commissioner and other parties, according to reports from The Sun Nigeria.
Official Responses and Security Measures
Ezza South Local Government Chairman Chinedu Mkpuma confirmed that his own Toyota Hilux was burnt during the unrest. In a statement signed on Friday, October 23, 2026, Mkpuma announced a ban on political gatherings in the local government area without prior authorization.
NDC candidate Rollins Offia Nwali expressed sympathy to the families of those killed and described the loss of life as regrettable. He appealed to youths not to be used by politicians pursuing personal ambitions.
The NDC condemned the attack, describing it as a serious threat to safety, peace, and democratic values. The party commended security agencies for their intervention and vowed that intimidation would not prevent them from contesting elections.
NDC Publicity Secretary Okereke Nnanna called on stakeholders to discourage inflammatory rhetoric and reject violence. He urged the promotion of peaceful participation and asked security agencies to strengthen protection measures and investigate the incident thoroughly.
