Integrating Modern Knowledge With Traditional Studies
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 -- Malaysian Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan urged religious scholars to broaden their knowledge base to include developments in science, technology, and geopolitics. He emphasized that this expansion is necessary to ensure the message of dakwah remains relevant in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Zulkifli stated that mastery of contemporary knowledge must accompany the study of traditional Islamic knowledge and ‘turath’ (Islamic classical heritage). This combination, he said, enables scholars to understand global changes and address challenges facing the ummah more comprehensively.
Focus on Quantum Computing and Superintelligence
The minister highlighted specific technological developments, including post-quantum cryptography, quantum computing, and superintelligence, noting their implications for cybersecurity, the economy, and geopolitical competition.
In a Facebook post, Zulkifli said quantum computing technology has the potential to break security systems currently used in banking, communications, government, and personal data. He noted that post-quantum cryptography is important for protecting data from future threats posed by quantum computers, particularly within these security sectors.
Zulkifli also referred to developments in the United States regarding superintelligence technology. He cited an executive order titled ‘Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence’ signed by President Donald Trump on Sept 29.
Malaysia’s Cybersecurity Status and Strategic Thinking
Expressing gratitude for Malaysia's progress in this field, Zulkifli noted that the country had emerged as the only ASEAN nation to achieve Tier 1 status in post-quantum cryptography migration readiness.
He said global technological and geopolitical developments require society, including religious scholars, to understand strategic issues. He advised against being preoccupied with trivial matters and differences of opinion that offer little benefit, stressing that an understanding of global issues and strategic thinking is important for providing guidance with wisdom and firmness.
Technology as a Tool for Religious Integrity
Zulkifli stated that science and technology must be mastered as tools to safeguard religious integrity, grounded in the values of ‘syarak’ (Islamic law).
He also stressed the importance of preserving bonds of friendship and brotherhood through dakwah and local arts and culture. Referencing the recent reunion of members of rock band XPDC at a concert, Zulkifli said differences of opinion within society or organizations are normal and should not affect fraternal ties. He called the XPDC reunion a "beautiful manifestation" of this principle.
He said artistic works can serve as a medium to nurture the public’s soul and convey spiritual messages. Citing songs such as Sedekah and Titian Perjalanan, as well as the anthem Kita Peng Yu, he noted these examples of art educating the soul and encouraging society to return to values of goodness.
