From 1920 to 1965, the great Buster Keaton leveraged locomotives to spectacular effect in his films. This video essay traces the arc of his iconic career along the tracks he traversed on screen: as a young performer during the rise of the silent era in Our Hospitality; while crafting his masterwork The General; and as an elder journeying across Canada aboard a railway speeder car in The Railrodder.
