Mardock Scramble: The First Compression

Rune Ballot, a downtrodden teenage prostitute in Mardock City, is picked up by an ambitious casino manager named Shell who showers her with everything she desires. Revived by a forged innocence, a forged past, and the counterfeit life Shell provides, Ballot feels grateful. Yet she cannot shake curiosity about his motives, so she researches his history on a computer. This misstep will dramatically alter her life. When Shell discovers what she has done, he attempts to burn her to death by blowing up her car.
