On April 1, 1983, at the ominous dawn of the AIDS crisis, gay entrepreneur and restaurateur Steve Harris opened the Castro Country Club as a sanctuary where people could gather and find community beyond the bars and clubs along Castro Street. For four decades, the CCC has saved thousands from the grips of addiction and alcoholism from its humble perch on 18th Street, one block from Castro Street.
