Brent Futures Surge Past $110 Amid Supply Concerns

Brent crude oil futures have experienced a significant rally in recent weeks, climbing to a high of $112.45 on Oct. 23 before settling at $111.70 on Friday. The price movement represents an approximately 18% increase from its lows earlier in the month. The upward trajectory began after Brent futures dipped to $95.12 on Sept. 30. Following that low, prices recovered sharply, rising above the $100 mark and positioning themselves for their largest monthly gain since July. According to InvestingCube, fears regarding oil supply and geopolitical tensions have kept energy markets at the forefront of investor discussions during this period.

Technical Levels and Moving Averages

Market analysis from InvestingCube highlights specific technical milestones reached during the rally. On Oct. 8, the rising floor level for Brent was recorded at $100.76. This was followed by a rise to $102.33 on Oct. 12 and $108.33 on Oct. 23. A 3.72% price thrust reached $110 on Oct. 16, before Brent hit $112.45 on Oct. 23, just 35 cents under the $112.80 ceiling flagged in their technical outlook. Since Oct. 1, the price has closed above the 10-day exponential moving average every session except for minor intraday dips on Oct. 20 and 21. Analysts have identified a rounding-bottom pattern, or cup formation, starting from $70.86 since mid-summer, with the 50-day average now positioned above the 200-day average.

Resistance Targets and Market Implications

To confirm a breakout, bulls need to see price close above the $112.80 mark on a daily basis, which would open up targets at $120 and then $125. However, analysts note that a rejection at resistance would likely drag price towards $104. In case of a rejection, a retreat to $104 appears likely with $100 as the next target and the demand area from $94.85 to $96.00. The EIA spot series on FRED printed roughly $10 above futures on Oct. 20, highlighting the divergence between physical and paper markets. The surge in oil prices has had broader market effects; $112 oil drove hawkish bets and impacted silver prices. Additionally, oil and foreign institutional investor (FII) selling weighed on India’s Sensex and Nifty indices.
