Questions Emerge Over 2018 China Visit

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing fresh scrutiny after it was revealed that he visited China in September 2018 alongside Manchester City club executives. During the trip, Burnham joined a Manchester City delegation for a photoshoot in Shenzhen to launch the club's new hub.

The visit occurred while Burnham was serving as the mayor of Greater Manchester. In a press release regarding the event, Burnham stated that the football club's ambition matched that of Chinese football authorities. The images from the trip show Burnham standing next to the Premier League trophy, which was adorned with Manchester City’s sky-blue ribbons and placed on a podium listing dates.

Opposition parties are now demanding that Burnham publish details of his meetings with Manchester City owners and representatives of the UAE government. Critics cite concerns over his links to Emirati investors associated with the club.

Political Pressure for Transparency

Nathan Evans, leader of the Conservative group on Trafford council, called for Burnham to release his diaries from his time as mayor. The request aims to allow for an examination of his meetings with Manchester City during that period.

Burnham’s position is that the China trip was routine. He stated that it was standard practice for regional sporting clubs to join business delegations on mayoral visits abroad. To support this claim, he cited previous trips he took with Manchester United and Lancashire Cricket Club.

Downing Street declined to comment on the specific details of the China meeting when asked by reporters.

Financial Breaches and Taxpayer Loans

The scrutiny comes as Manchester City faces significant legal challenges. The club was found guilty of breaching over 100 financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Reports suggest that the UAE government may pull UK investment due to the verdict.

Concerns regarding Burnham’s relationship with the club extend beyond the China visit. The Telegraph reported that while mayor, Burnham oversaw a £55m taxpayer loan to companies controlled by Sheik Mansour, the owner of Manchester City. These decisions were made during meetings in 2017.

Burnham has clarified his stance on the club's recent legal issues. He insisted that he had "downplayed the seriousness of the findings" regarding the financial breaches. He stated that "no one is above the rules," a comment addressing the broader implications of the verdict for the club and its investors.
