First Public Image of Ground-Launched Missile

U.S. defense startup Castelion has released an image showing its Blackbeard hypersonic missile launching from a truck-mounted system being developed for the U.S. Army. The photograph, shared by the company on social media, depicts a Blackbeard missile leaving an enclosed launcher mounted on a high-mobility military truck.

The release provides the first public look at the ground-launched version of the weapon, designated as Blackbeard GL, and its containerized launch architecture. According to reports, the vehicle in the image appears consistent with an Oshkosh logistics truck that Castelion had previously discussed converting for launch testing.

The launcher appears designed to fit within the U.S. Army’s existing mobile rocket artillery ecosystem. However, the company has emphasized that its test hardware is intended to support rapid development and should not necessarily be considered representative of the final weapon. The image does not confirm how many missiles the launcher can carry or how closely the test configuration matches the eventual production system.

It remains unclear whether the pictured configuration represents the final production design. Castelion has stated that its objective is to deliver roughly 80% of the capability planned for the Army’s Precision Strike Missile Increment 4 at a substantially lower cost per missile.

Army Development Timeline and Milestones

The U.S. Army has described the weapon as an affordable, mass-produced precision-fire capability intended to engage time-sensitive, moving, and hardened targets. The Army’s development plan outlines a specific sequence for testing and integration.

The plan calls for an initial ground-launch demonstration using a modified Multiple Launch Rocket System Family of Munitions pod. This is followed by the deployment of Blackbeard GL prototypes and a dedicated launcher pod. The longer-term goal is to conduct a minimum viable product flight test using the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System’s fire-control system.

Looking further ahead, the Army’s fiscal year 2027 budget documentation lists a live-fire launch of a production-representative Blackbeard GL and launcher pod as a planned milestone. This structured approach aims to validate the missile's integration with existing military infrastructure before full-scale deployment.

Technical Specifications and Flight Dynamics

Hypersonic weapons travel above Mach 5, but their flight profiles and maneuverability can complicate detection and defense. Blackbeard is being developed around a more compact approach that could make it easier to integrate into existing mobile launch infrastructure, unlike the Long Range Hypersonic Weapon which relies on specialized launch equipment.

The precise propulsion system, flight profile, and performance specifications of the production missile remain undisclosed. Castelion has previously suggested a range approaching 500 miles, although ground launches could reduce that range compared with aircraft launches.

Naval Integration and Contract Awards

Beyond the Army’s ground-based program, Castelion is also working to integrate the missile onto the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18E/F fighter. In April, the company received a $105 million Navy contract to support integration and the transition to early operational capability.

A subsequent $23.4 million order covered 50 pre-production missiles. These contracts underscore the growing interest in hypersonic technology across multiple branches of the U.S. military, with Castelion positioning its platform as a versatile solution for both ground and air launch platforms.
