Smoke Detected Near North Ghawar Complex

Satellite imaging and open-source intelligence accounts have identified signs of a large fire near a processing facility south of the Ayn Dar oil field in Saudi Arabia, according to reports from OilPrice.com. NASA FIRMS data confirmed that smoke originated from coordinates 25°50’21.3″N 49°13’36.3″E.

Reports indicated rising smoke at the North Ghawar Oil Producing Complex, which is part of Saudi Arabia’s giant Ghawar oil field located west of the critical Abqaiq processing complex, according to Mario Nawfal. However, open-source accounts noted that the identified smoke plume did not appear to originate from the main Abqaiq oil processing facility.

While anonymous news sources reported to IRNA that the Houthis attacked the Abqaiq oil city in eastern Saudi Arabia on Wednesday afternoon local time, the attack remains unconfirmed at an early stage. No official sources had confirmed a Wednesday attack as of the time of reporting.

Maritime Incidents and Export Recovery

Amid the uncertainty regarding land-based facilities, the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations agency announced vessel incidents that appeared to have occurred on Tuesday. These included strikes on a liquefied natural gas carrier and a crude oil tanker by unidentified projectiles.

One incident involved a Very Large Crude Carrier in the Strait of Hormuz hit by a drone, causing a brief fire that was extinguished with no casualties.

Diplomatic Stalemate and Regional Tensions

The potential for further escalation is underscored by reports from Axios, which cited sources stating that Qatari mediators' efforts to broker a diplomatic breakthrough between the US and Iran made little progress. Neither side was willing to budge in negotiations, bolstering beliefs that renewed military conflict is becoming more likely.

Despite these tensions, Al Jazeera correspondent reported that Washington had submitted a counter-proposal to Tehran regarding talks with Iran. Meanwhile, Hossein Mohebbi, an IRGC spokesman, told semi-official Fars news agency that there is a "military conflict" in the Strait of Hormuz on a daily basis and that the US is not responding to Iranian strikes on small ships.

Market Implications

Simon-Peter Massabni from XS.com stated that widespread reports indicated Arabian Gulf exports were recovering, reducing fears of an immediate crude shortage. This recovery helped explain falling prices despite little progress in US-Iran talks. He questioned if the shipment pace could be sustained through October.
