Malaysian Prime Minister meets Turkmenistan leader
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat on June 19, 2026. The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace.
The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, particularly within the energy sector.
Petronas agreements signed
During the visit, Petronas signed several agreements with Turkmenistan. These include a Production Sharing Agreement for Offshore Blocks 19 and 20. A Cooperation Agreement on 2D Seismic Studies for Northern Offshore Blocks was also signed.
The agreements allow Petronas to participate in developing major gas fields in Turkmenistan, which possesses some of the world's largest gas reserves.
Energy security announcements
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin assured Malaysia of oil and gas supplies for the next 20 years. This announcement was made alongside reports regarding Petronas signing agreements in Turkmenistan.
