Building a Domestic Magnet Supply Chain
MP Materials is attempting to reestablish a domestic rare earth magnet supply chain in the United States through its "Independence" factory located in Fort Worth, Texas. The facility processes raw materials extracted from MP Materials' Mountain Pass mine in Southern California into automotive-grade magnets designed for electric motors.
The project represents a significant infrastructure effort to localize the production of critical components for the electric vehicle industry. Inside the Independence factory, employees wearing protective thermal suits work near equipment where temperatures surpass 1,000 degrees Celsius under bright white lighting. The processing involves materials that appear as gum strips, corn flakes, and crushed pepper laid out on tables during various stages of production.
Permanent magnet motors, which rely on rare earth magnets housed in the rotor, are more power-dense and efficient than induction motors. While induction motors are also used in some electric vehicles, such as for all-wheel drive assist in the GM Equinox EV, the industry shift toward permanent magnets has driven demand for domestic sources of these materials.
Addressing Strategic Vulnerabilities
The push for domestic production comes amid concerns over global supply chain stability. China dominates global rare earth magnet production, accounting for 49% of the global supply and holding the largest known reserves. According to reports, virtually all rare earths used in the U.S. are currently sourced overseas.
Recent disruptions have highlighted the strategic vulnerabilities inherent in this reliance on foreign suppliers. A supplier shortage of magnets caused a one-week halt in Ford Explorer SUV production, underscoring the urgent need for American independence in critical mineral processing.
Major automakers are already adjusting their sourcing strategies in response to these risks. General Motors is partnering with MP Materials to source EV magnets domestically as part of its broader strategy to localize its EV supply chain. This partnership aims to protect against policy swings and tariff changes that could affect international trade flows.
