Obstacles to Bilateral Trust

\n

Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey stated that providing shelter to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and allowing her to engage in political activities is making it harder to rebuild public trust in Bangladesh-India relations. The diplomat made these remarks on October 9 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

\n

Ansarey, a senior secretary-ranked ambassador attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke during a discussion on Asanga Abeyagoonasekera’s book, \"Winds of Change: Geopolitics at the Crossroads of South and Southeast Asia.\" He argued that rebuilding relations requires tangible steps from India.

\n

Ansarey said India needs to make greater efforts to understand the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh and other neighboring countries. He added that lasting friendship must be built with a country's people rather than being confined to a particular leader or political party.

Regional Geopolitical Shifts

\n

During the same event, Michael Kugelman, a resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, provided context on the shifting dynamics in South and Southeast Asia. Kugelman stated that geopolitical competition in the region now includes Russia strengthening its position through energy ties with Bangladesh and engagement in Pakistan and Nepal.

\n

Kugelman noted that while new leadership in countries like the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Nepal is often interpreted as a shift toward China, these nations are actually seeking a better balance in their relations with both India and China. He said major changes in US foreign policy following Donald Trump's return to office are affecting geopolitical competition in the region.

\n

Ansarey expressed support for expanding friendship with both India and China based on equality, mutual respect, and sovereignty. He asserted that Bangladesh must retain the freedom to make decisions in its own people's interests. The ambassador welcomed China's cooperative approach toward Bangladesh.

\n

Global Political Perspectives

\n

Ansarey cited the recent red-carpet reception hosted by US President Donald Trump for Chinese President Xi Jinping as a sign of the importance of dialogue and cooperation between rival powers. He referred to an opportunity under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to translate people's aspirations for freedom, dignity, and accountable government into changes.
