New Vessels Replace Decades-Old Fleet

A fleet of 10 rental motorboats shipped from the Netherlands has arrived at Point Defiance marina, replacing the final vessel from a long-serving group of fiberglass boats. Cecil Goodson, the marina supervisor for Parks Tacoma, confirmed that the new vessels have been delivered to update the facility's rental offerings. The arrival of these boats marks the end of an era for the single remaining rental motorboat at the location. According to Goodson, this last boat has served tourists and fishermen for 50 years before being pulled from service. The vessel had been part of a larger fleet of 12 to 15 identical fiberglass boats that had been in operation since the 1970s. Goodson noted that the current single motorboat remains seaworthy and continues to attract significant demand. Visitors line up to rent the boat every day, with some queues forming as early as 5 a.m. The new fleet is now available to replace this solitary vessel in the rental inventory.

Delays Due to Global Events

The transition to the new fleet was not immediate. Parks Tacoma had planned to update the fiberglass fleet two years prior to the current delivery. However, the timeline for the purchase and arrival of the new boats from the Netherlands was disrupted by international geopolitical events. Goodson stated that the Strait of Hormuz closed around the time approval was granted to purchase the new vessels. This closure contributed to the delay in the project. The original plan had been to have the new fleet ready for the summer of 2026 season. Because of the delays caused by the geopolitical situation, the last remaining fiberglass boat was the only rental motorboat option available during that period.

History of Rentals at Point Defiance

The rental boat business at Point Defiance has a long history dating back to the 1920s. During that decade, the facility utilized rowboats for rentals. At one point in its history, the fleet consisted of 200 boats. Motorboats likely entered the rental inventory during the 1940s. The fiberglass boats that served for the last several decades were part of this long lineage of watercraft available to visitors at the Tacoma park. The arrival of the new Dutch-built vessels represents the latest update in the facility's ongoing rental operations.
