A Defining Partnership for the Century Ahead
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the India-US partnership as a defining relationship for the 21st century during a reception in Mumbai marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Speaking at the event, Rubio emphasized that the history of the 21st century is being written in the region and asserted that the partnership between Washington and New Delhi is shaping what the century will look like.
Rubio stated, "The 21st century will be defined for better or worse by what happens in this region," referring to the wider region’s geopolitical significance. He characterized the strategic alignment between India and the US as "extraordinary," noting that while nations may disagree on some issues, their core interests define national interests.
Technological Alignment and Shared Expertise
Rubio highlighted shared interests in artificial intelligence, superintelligence, and quantum computing, stating that both countries are aligned on how emerging technologies should be developed to maximize benefits while mitigating risks. He stated that India and the US have the same expertise and talented people working on technological challenges, describing their alliance as "perfectly aligned." This focus on technology underscores the depth of cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic channels.
Demographic and Economic Magnitude
Rubio noted the demographic and economic magnitude of the two powers, characterizing India as a country nearing a population of 1.5 billion and the US as the planet's largest economy. He emphasized engaging more with India as the world’s most populous nation and a strong geopolitical partner. Hailing India as a "powerful and influential" nation, Rubio said the partnership can help shape the course of the 21st century while upholding shared values rooted in individual dignity, democratic principles, and the rule of law.
High-Level Bilateral Discussions
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with Rubio in Mumbai, discussing bilateral ties focusing on trade, energy, technology, defense, and people-to-people ties. These discussions reflect the comprehensive nature of the relationship, spanning multiple sectors critical to both nations' future growth and security.
Commitment to Frequent Engagement
Rubio signaled plans to visit India every three months, stating, "I’ll see you again in three months because I’m coming now every three months." This commitment to frequent engagement highlights the administration's prioritization of the Indo-Pacific region and the strategic importance placed on maintaining close ties with New Delhi.
