Eagles Secure Dominant Victory Over Werribee Giants
The Sunshine Eagles defeated the Werribee Giants 18-0 in five innings to claim their second win of the Baseball Victoria summer league Premier 1 First Nine competition on Saturday. The victory extended a strong start to the season for the club, which now holds two wins from its first three games.
Both of the Eagles' victories this season have come by margins exceeding 10 runs. The team required only five innings to complete the shutout against Werribee, swinging the bat effectively throughout the shortened contest.
Weather Delays and Pitching Performance
Eagles coach Stuart Clayton noted that the team was fortunate that weather conditions held off long enough for the game to proceed. "We got lucky with the weather holding off," Clayton stated, highlighting the precarious timing of the match within the broader weekend schedule.
All games scheduled for Sunday were subsequently cancelled due to weather, according to Clayton. This cancellation underscored the importance of the Saturday completion, allowing the Eagles to secure a decisive result before the elements intervened across the region.
Pitcher Jamie Young led the defensive effort by throwing a one-hitter against the Giants. Clayton praised Young's performance, stating, "Jamie pitched well and threw a one-hitter. We had a really good day." The coach also highlighted the team's offensive output, adding, "We swung the bat really well." The combination of Young's precision on the mound and the team's aggressive hitting at the plate ensured the Giants were unable to generate significant offensive pressure.
Roster Updates and New Players
The Eagles entered the lineup with adjustments to their roster due to an import catcher who remains abroad. This absence created an immediate opportunity for 17-year-old Lincoln Grech to make his first top-grade match for the club.
Grech contributed both defensively in his catching role and offensively, recording several hits during the game. His performance marked a significant milestone for the teenager, who stepped into a critical role with minimal notice. Clayton provided context on Grech's recent experience, noting that the teenager played the winter season with players from Greensborough and spent last summer with Essendon.
Clayton also pointed to broader roster changes, stating the team has added "five or six new players" to its depth. He expressed hope that this expanded roster, which includes three pitchers for the year, will help the team advance deeper into the finals. The addition of these players was viewed as a strategic move to bolster the squad's resilience and versatility as the season progresses.
Women’s Team Suffers First Loss
In other league action on Saturday, the Eagles’ women’s regional west side squad experienced a different result. The team suffered a 23-9 loss to Fitzroy, marking their first defeat of the season.
This loss ended an undefeated streak for the women's team, contrasting sharply with the dominant performance of the men's Premier 1 First Nine side. While the Eagles' men secured an 18-0 shutout victory, the women's team faced a challenging outing against Fitzroy, highlighting the varied outcomes across the club's divisions on the same day.
