Trump Declares Pause on Military Action Before Midterms

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States will not launch military strikes against Iran prior to the midterm elections in November. The declaration came via a post on Truth Social just after noon Eastern time, in which Trump stated, "we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections."

In the same post, Trump claimed that active discussions with Iranian officials are ongoing and asserted that oil is "flowing in record numbers." The statement marks a significant pivot from previous rhetoric, where Trump had warned that Iran would be hit "really hard" if diplomatic talks collapsed.

The timing of the announcement coincides with reports that the White House has asked the Pentagon to develop strike options against Iranian targets. Administration officials told The Atlantic that these options were intended to be exercised ahead of the midterms to reduce gas prices and demonstrate progress before the vote. However, the decision on whether to proceed with any such strikes remains under debate within the administration.

According to The Atlantic, reported late Wednesday, the Pentagon is actively preparing strike options for President Trump to consider, with the final decision still being debated among senior officials.

Iran Reports Mine Explosions in Strait of Hormuz

Amidst the diplomatic signaling, Iranian state media reported new incidents involving oil tankers in the southern passage of the Strait of Hormuz. In late-night hours according to Tehran time, the Islamic Republic Broadcasting (IRIB) stated that "several heavy explosions" occurred after vessels struck mines spread in the area.

Iranian military sources cited by Gulf Insider attributed the explosions to oil tankers hitting the mines. The reports indicate that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) may have been responsible for striking two commercial ships outside of traditional chokepoints over a recent 24-hour window. These incidents included a vessel off the coast of Qatar and a Very Large Crude Carrier near the United Arab Emirates.

While Iran has previously claimed that vessels struck mines along the Omani Route, these latest reports specifically identify the southern passage of the Strait of Hormuz as the location of the recent explosions. The incidents add to regional tensions even as diplomatic channels remain open.

Negotiations Continue Despite Military Posturing

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the state of negotiations with the United States on Thursday, asserting that talks are not completely dead. Pezeshkian stated that Iran and the U.S. have exchanged proposals through intermediaries and emphasized that Iran has never left the negotiating table despite US attacks.

However, reports out of Iran confirmed earlier Wednesday that negotiations are 'stalemated'. This contradiction in messaging is compounded by the deep suspicion held by Iranian leadership toward current American statements.

US and Israeli officials say Iranian leaders are deeply suspicious of Trump’s statements and want to avoid a third surprise attack, according to Axios. This wariness persists even as President Pezeshkian publicly maintains that diplomatic engagement continues.
