Washington Moves to Curtail Iranian Diplomatic Presence

The Trump administration has ordered Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave New York earlier than originally planned, according to two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The directive, issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marks a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions as high-level gatherings at the United Nations conclude.

While Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed New York just one day after speaking at the U.N. General Assembly last week, Foreign Minister Araghchi had remained behind with the ostensible purpose of engaging in indirect talks with the United States. These discussions were reportedly focused on critical regional issues, including negotiations regarding the Strait of Hormuz, broader conflict resolution, and the ongoing nuclear program.

According to reports first detailed by Axios, Rubio’s decision to mandate the immediate departure of the Iranian delegation stems from a determination that Tehran had "overstayed their welcome." One official indicated that with high-level U.N. meetings now over, the diplomatic justification for the extended stay had evaporated.

Fractured Negotiations and Mediator Stalemates

The timing of the expulsion order appears linked to the lack of progress in recent diplomatic efforts. After weekend meetings between Iranian representatives and Qatari mediators yielded little tangible advancement, Rubio communicated to the Iranians on Monday that Araghchi and his team were required to leave immediately.

Under previous arrangements, the Trump administration had granted visas with severe restrictions to both President Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Araghchi specifically to attend the U.N. General Assembly. Some accounts suggest that Araghchi had initially planned to remain in New York until Wednesday before departing very early Tuesday, a timeline that was abruptly shortened by the Secretary of State’s intervention.

Tehran Denies Coercion, Claims Adherence to Schedule

The Iranian U.N. delegation has firmly rejected the characterization that they were forcibly expelled or ordered to leave against their will. In a statement posted via X, the delegation asserted that they departed on Monday evening in accordance with a schedule that had been previously communicated to the U.S. Department of State on September 17.

Further complicating the narrative, the delegation accused the State Department of propagating "baseless and worthless news" regarding the circumstances of their departure. The Iranian side maintained that they achieved nothing in their interactions with American officials, suggesting that the diplomatic impasse was mutual rather than a result of unilateral U.S. coercion.

As the dust settles on this latest diplomatic row, the incident highlights the fragile nature of current U.S.-Iran relations and the limited avenues available for direct dialogue between the two nations outside of formal multilateral settings.
