The Original Thought
The Original Thought is a short film about two students, Vig and Logan, who are trying to craft an entry for a competition centered on the Old vs. New theme. Vig wants the project to be strong, but instead of trusting his own ideas, he keeps turning to AI for guidance. He relies on it to select locations, shape scenes, and imbue the film with meaning. Logan grows frustrated, because the film looks polished yet feels inauthentic. As they travel through a sequence of locations, Vig begins to see the flaw: the AI produced a plan, but it does not grasp why those places matter. He learns that a quality film requires more than clever answers; it demands human thought, purpose, and meaning. In the end, Vig turns away from the phone and opts to rewrite the film himself. He realizes he can forge something more honest than AI because the idea must originate with him. The short demonstrates that new tools like AI can assist, but they cannot replace original human thinking.
