Ram Denies BJP Strengthening Claims Amid Political Row
Braj Mohan Ram, the newly appointed Governor-designate of Odisha, issued a formal clarification on Thursday regarding reported statements suggesting he intended to strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organization in the state after assuming office. The intervention came as political tensions escalated following allegations that Ram planned to use his new position to bolster the ruling party's infrastructure in the eastern state.
Ram explicitly denied making such statements during an interview with ANI. He clarified that his previous comments had been misinterpreted, stating, "No, I did not say this. I said that I will work in coordination with everyone." Emphasizing his stance on political neutrality, he further explained his position on political affiliation: "I am above party politics now, but the party I belong to is my capital. I will always have affinity and love for that party. But I will not work for any particular party." He concluded his remarks in Hindi with the phrase, "Hum sabke hain, sab hamare hain," which translates to "I am everyone's, and everyone is mine," signaling an intent to serve all citizens regardless of political alignment.
Opposition Backlash and Appointment Context
The clarification followed widespread outrage and a political row triggered by reports suggesting Ram intended to bolster the BJP’s organizational presence in Odisha. Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Congress party, mounted attacks on Ram regarding his future plans in the state. These criticisms focused on concerns that his appointment might shift the balance of power in a region where the BJD has historically held significant influence.
Ram, a three-time former Member of Parliament from Jharkhand, was appointed Governor of Odisha on October 12 by President Droupadi Murmu. His transition from a long-standing political career in Jharkhand to the constitutional post of Governor in Odisha has drawn intense scrutiny from political observers and opposition leaders alike.
