O'Toole Steps Down as Mayor to Seek Council Seat

Rob O'Toole will step down from his role as mayor of Sun Peaks following this month's election, seeking instead to continue supporting the municipality as a councillor. O'Toole was elected mayor in the April 2025 by-election following the passing of former mayor Al Raine. He had previously served as a councillor since 2018.

O'Toole stated that opting for a council seat will help balance his working and family life while allowing him to continue some of the work he has done over the last term. He expressed hope that his experience would support Jason White as he transitions into the mayor's position.

"There's a lot of momentum going into this next four-year term, and I really wanted the opportunity to be at that table," O'Toole said.

Housing and Tourism Agreements Highlighted

Reflecting on his time in office, O'Toole pointed to several key accomplishments. He cited the BC Builds housing project, which will bring 110 rental units to Sun Peaks, as a major achievement he is proud of. The project fulfills a wish of former mayor Al Raine.

O'Toole also highlighted the municipality's multi-year management agreement with Tourism Sun Peaks to oversee operations at the Sun Peaks Centre and arena. He described this agreement as a success that has helped provide festivals and stabilize the economy.

Additionally, O'Toole pointed to municipal administration changes completed over the past four years. These changes included new hires, internal promotions, and updated policies, which he characterized as foundational work.

Acknowledging Infrastructure and Health Challenges

O'Toole acknowledged challenges regarding cost overruns on the freshwater pipeline project. He stated that he would approach infrastructure development differently by learning from other municipalities like Kamloops.

He also admitted that reopening the Sun Peaks Community Health Centre was challenging. O'Toole noted that he would have supported re-establishing a community-led health association earlier in the process.

Future Advocacy Priorities

If elected to council, O'Toole plans to advocate for infrastructure improvements and affordable housing. He also intends to address what he describes as a "taxation imbalance" affecting resort communities.
