Cantinflas stars as a porter who supplements his income by writing letters and speeches on his old typewriter, even as he continues his schooling. The story deepens as he falls for his pretty neighbor, Silvia Pinal, a woman who is handicapped and unable to walk. The path to happiness becomes complicated when a young military man also courts her. Embracing a Cyrano de Bergerac-like role, the porter writes love letters to her on behalf of the soldier, signed by the young man. His plan is straightforward: win money at the horse races to pay for the operation that will make her walk again.
